Overview
Beginning in 2006, whenever I travel to another town or city in the U.S. I meet with and invite community activists, educators, and artists to offer their perceptions of the state of the union given the day-to-day reality they encounter in their local context.Through first hand accounts from across the United States a troubling picture of the state of the union emerges. This is not a top down analysis, but rather an on the ground account of the struggles of many Americans and many communities to survive.

Issues such as the lack of adequate food, shelter and clothing, equitable access to a good education, employment opportunities and equal rights; coupled with a strong desire for an end to the wars re-occur as themes in many of these stories. In addition, what emerges is an awareness that survival requires we participate in engaged citizenship within a framework that acknowledges global interdependence.
